Saint Paul Lutheran School promotes the love of reading at every age level! Several reading clubs are offered to provide enriching activities based on current book selections. Books have varied topics and include fiction, as well as non-fiction, selections.
Monarch Book Club – For 1st and 2nd grade students
20 books geared for primary-aged readers are on the list provided by the Illinois School Library Media Association. Mrs. Lonergan, 1st Grade teacher, reads Monarch book selections and conducts discussions for 1st and 2nd grade students.
Blue Stem Book Club – For 3rd- 5th grade students
A set of 20 favorite books chosen by Illinois librarians, teachers, and students are provided for the intermediate level reader. Mrs. Rittle, 3rd grade teacher, holds a meeting each week during lunch for students who wish to participate. Mrs. Rittle picks a book from list and reads it aloud. Enrichment activities to increase comprehension and enjoyment of the books are provided. All intermediate students are invited to participate and small prize rewards are given for reading progress. Students participate in a state-wide vote for their favorite book.
Rebecca Caudill Readers’ Club – For 4th-8th grade students
The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award was developed to encourage children and young adults to read for personal satisfaction. It is an Illinois award for outstanding literature for young people and is sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council, the Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. Saint Paul students meet with Mrs. DeCant during lunch periods once a week to discuss books from the list. Prizes are given for reading progress. Students participate in a state-wide competition to vote for their favorite book from the Rebecca Caudill list.
